Sumner is Christchurch’s best beach

Thursday, January 1st, 2015

It’s not news to us, but a recent survey of New Zealand’s best beaches rates Sumner beach as Christchurch’s best, albeit some way behind other beaches in the South Island.

What the article fails to mention is that the smaller local Scarborough Beach has many other attractions, especially for our guests.  Not only is it closer, less crowded and within 5 minutes walk, but the beach has a gentler slope  meaning that it is often safer for little ones. The beach is tidal and accessed by many paths between rocks.  It is best used at or around low tide, especially when the surf is up.  As always safety in the water is your direct responsibility!!

There is a great cafe – Ocean Cafe & Bar – between the beach and the new paddling pool (new as of XMas 2014).

The Learn to Surf school is 3 blocks away, 2 blocks towards Sumner Village from the end of Menzies St.
You can phone Aaron and his team direct on 0800 80 SURF ie 0800 80 78 73.  Or just turn up1!

“Think of Christchurch and beach that comes to mind is Sumner. For more than 150 years it has been the city beach. “As Christchurch as fish and chips on Sumner Beach, ” goes one radio campaign. But it could just as easily be “as Christchurch as an ice-cream at Sumner Beach” or even “as Christchurch as an evening swim after work at Sumner Beach“.

“At least part of the attraction to locals is the dramatic difference between inner city life a mere 10km away and the beach’s clean salt air and golden sands. It’s an ideal family beach that slopes gently into the sea. Photo: John Kirk Anderson/Fairfax NZs
