Getting to Sumner (From the City)

Our Sumner B&B is a comfortable 20-minute drive from central Christchurch. There are many possible routes, but we recommend:

• Head east out of town on Gloucester St

• Turn right at the traffic lights onto Linwood Ave (oblique intersection)

• Follow the main road for c.10 km to Sumner

Once in Sumner

Immediately after the pedestrian crossing in the Sumner shopping area, turn left onto Nayland St. Abbott House Sumner B&B is on the right at the third corner, just before Menzies St. For off-street parking turn right into Menzies St, and immediately right into our driveway. Please park on the right hand side.

From the Airport

• Take the main road, Memorial Avenue

• Continue straight ahead onto Fendalton Road (BP Petrol Station on the right)

• At Y intersection with Harper Avenue and Deans Ave, turn left into Harper Ave

• At the end of the park, continue straight ahead onto the multiple lane Bealey Ave

• At the end of Bealey Ave, where the multiple lanes stop, turn right onto Fitzgerald Ave

• Cross the Avon River, and immediately turn left into Avonside Drive (first set of lights)

• Follow the river, crossing one intersection, and just as the main road leaves the river, turn right onto Linwood Ave (there is a traffic island)

• Follow the main road for c.11 km to Sumner

From the South

• Take the Main South Road to Blenheim Rd roundabout (just over Sockburn rail overbridge)

• Veer right onto Blenheim Rd

• Turn right onto the ring road, Curletts Rd (first set of lights)

• Follow ring road - at the end of the two-lane open-road section it becomes the four-lane Brougham St

• Continue through multiple sets of lights (often signposted to Lyttelton)

• Brougham St eventually reverts to two lanes

• Cross the Heathcote River

• Veer left at the next intersection onto Garlands Rd (there is a "free turn")

• Once again cross the Heathcote River - the main road veers left

• Turn right at the next traffic lights - onto Ferry Rd

• Continue straight ahead on Ferry Rd through a roundabout and follow the Heathcote River

• At the Y intersection, continue straight on

• Immedately cross the Heathcote River for the final time

• Follow the main road for c.5 km to Sumner

From the North

The most easily followed route is to

• Head for the City Centre through Belfast and into Redwood

• Turn left onto the Ring Road, Queen Elizabeth II Drive, at St Bede's College

• Follow the ring road in the direction of Lyttelton

• Eventually cross over the sewage ponds, and continue straight on for a further 1.5 km

• Turn left at the next set of lights onto Linwood Ave

• Follow the main road for some 7 km to Sumner

From Lyttelton

• Just head over the hill to Sumner

• Stop at the top and admire the view of the harbour

• Follow the main road into Sumner

• Turn right onto Nayland St as you enter the shops and cafés - just before the pedestrian crossing
