Sumner B&B Accommodation

Getting to Sumner (From the City)

Our Sumner B&B is a comfortable 25-30 minute drive from central Christchurch. There are many possible routes, but we recommend:

  • Head east out of town on Gloucester St (you can join Gloucester St from Madras St, Barbadoes St or from Fitzgerald Ave)
  • Turn right at the traffic lights onto Linwood Ave (oblique intersection)
  • Follow the main road for c.10 km to Sumner

Once in Sumner

Immediately after the pedestrian crossing in the Sumner shopping area, turn left onto Nayland St. Abbott House Sumner B&B is on the right at the third corner, just before Menzies St. For off-street parking turn right into Menzies St, and immediately right into our driveway. Please park on the right hand side.

Bus Services

The PURPLE bus is a regular service (every 15 mins for most of the day) that runs directly between the airport and our front door.  See timetable.  As a guide the final depot is c.5 minutes away, the central city bus exchange is c.30 minutes away, and the airport is c.60 – 75 minutes away. The adult cash fare to the airport is currently $8.00 ($3.50 for all other town destinations).  For definitive fares please check here. Abbott House Sumner B&B is in Zone 1.

Taxis

There is a taxi stand at the airport. We recommend Gold Band Taxis and Blue Star Taxis, long-term operators in Christchurch.
Likely travel time is c.35-40 minutes.
The fare to the airport is $75-80, $10 more expensive if travelling from the airport (due to airport taxes!!)

Shuttle
See the SuperShuttle website here.

From the Airport

  • Take the main road, Memorial Avenue
  • Continue straight ahead onto Fendalton Road (BP Petrol Station on the right)
  • At Y intersection with Harper Avenue and Deans Ave, turn left into Harper Ave
  • At the end of the park, continue straight ahead onto the multiple lane Bealey Ave
  • At the end of Bealey Ave, where the multiple lanes stop, turn right onto Fitzgerald Ave
  • Cross the Avon River, and take the third left into Gloucester St
  • Follow Gloucester St and turn right at the second set of lights onto Linwood Ave (oblique intersection)
  • Follow the main road for c.11 km to Sumner

From the South

  • Take the Main South Road to Halswell Junction Rd, past Templeton and before Hornby
  • Turn right onto Halswell Junction Rd and follow motorway signs and motorway
  • Follow ring road – at the end of the two-lane open-road section it becomes the four-lane Brougham St
  • Continue through multiple sets of lights (often signposted to Lyttelton)
  • Brougham St eventually reverts to two lanes (one each way with no traffic island)
  • Cross the Heathcote River
  • Veer left at the next intersection onto Garlands Rd (there is a “free turn”)
  • Once again cross the Heathcote River – the main road veers left
  • Turn right at the next traffic lights – onto Ferry Rd
  • Continue straight ahead on Ferry Rd through a roundabout and follow the Heathcote River
  • At the lights-controlled Y intersection, veer right
  • Immediately cross the Heathcote River for the final time (there will be roadworks at the Ferrymead Bridge until 2015)
  • Follow the main road for c.5 km to Sumner

From the North

The most easily followed route is to

  • Head for the City Centre through Belfast and into Redwood
  • Turn left onto the Ring Road, Queen Elizabeth II Drive, at St Bede’s College
  • Follow the ring road in the direction of Lyttelton
  • Eventually cross over the sewage ponds, and continue straight on for a further 1.5 km
  • Turn left at the next set of lights onto Linwood Ave
  • Follow the main road for some 7 km to Sumner (The Estuary will be on your left for most of the journey)
  • In Sumner village just after the pedestrian crossing turn left onto Nayland St

From Lyttelton

Once upon a time, pre-quakes,  you could just head over the hill to Sumner.  Sadly that is not possible at the moment.  The following directions should remain valid during most of the road repairs expected in 2012 to 2018, when we are told that the road to Lyttelton will reopen (at last!!!).

  • Take the tunnel from Lyttelton through to Heathcote
  • Stay on the main Tunnel Road until Ferry Road, immediately after crossing the Heathcote River
  • Turn right onto Ferry Road
  • Follow the main road into Sumner
  • Turn left onto Nayland St  – just after the pedestrian crossing
